Glossary The terms found in the glossary frequently appear in discussions about protection of conscience. Some of the ideas they convey are the subject of dispute. In other cases, the same term can mean different things. Important terms are defined in regular typeface, and, where appropriate, opposing definitions or ideas are set out in italics. Generally speaking, the first definition in each case is the one that provides the broadest protection for conscientious objection. Applications of the definitions are also given for each word so that the reader can more clearly see the consequences of changed meaning.
