Repression of Conscience

Christian Doctor Denied Employment

Glasgow, Scotland (October, 2000)

Dr. Everett Julyan, a Christian, has complained that he was denied employment by  North Glasgow Universities trust because he has moral objections to participation in abortion. The issue was raised in an interview during the application process.

The British Medical Association in Scotland is aware of a number of conflicts of conscience involving physicians.

The United Kingdom's  Abortion Act includes a provision to protect conscientious objectors from being forced to participate in abortions, but it does not explicitly prevent discrimination against applicants for employment or education programmes.

For Dr. Julyan's description of the incident, see Access to Appointments: The Effect of Discrimination on Careers.
